    SEO Services and Web Design

Turner Dow specialises in SEO services. This is obviously closely associated with the web site, so where the site hasn't been created yet, part of our service is to oversee it's construction using your web company, your in-house web developers, or web development companies that we work with to produce the web site but to ensure that a search engine friendly optimised site is the result.
Web design companies generally design snazzy looking, functional, efficient and fully featured web sites that are sub-optimal from a search engine standpoint. They use graphics, frames, leave out the htaccess file, fail to utilise the mod_rewrite function, don't allow the search engines to be able to view the content of the page by using frames and javascript, link inappropriately, and much more. The sites look good and perform well but are not built to be indexed and exposed by the search engines. Most web design companies think they know all about SEO services, but fail to understand how search engines work, how they analyse a site and how they decide where to rank sites for particular search phrases.
Some questions a web design company should be able to answer if they really are good for SEO services are:
    • How might the htaccess file be used to enhance search engine rank?
    • How would the mod_rewrite function be used to enhance search engine positioning?
    • Why might the existence of http://domainname.com and http://www.domainname.com be a problem?
    • How would you resolve the canonical issues above?
    • Why should frames be used with extreme caution?
    • For a product sales site - how might you enhance the individual product indexing by search engines?
    • What is a reasonable key phrase density per page?
    • What external optimisation would you include in your SEO services?
    • What importance is off-site optimisation against on-site optimisation? (should be 80/20 respectively)
    • What is 'anchor text' for a link?
    • How would you research the best key phrases?
    • How will you obtain external links to the site?
    • What are the important factors in securing external links to the site?
    • How would you utilise RSS in your SEO services?
If you're investigating design companies, feel free to contact for ideal answers to these questions. You won't be obligated to us. Certainly other SEO services companies should answer these questions thoroughly and with authority, but so too should the web design company you choose, to save from undoing work when looking for better SEO services. It's generally preferable to have an SEO services company oversee the design of the site if such is not already completed.

    Redesigning a Web Site
A site redesign is a fact of life, and shows forward momentum of the company represented by the site - thelayout starts to look a little tired. But time and time again, these site changes are made without reference to how the search engine sees the result. Individual pages with significant search engine traction are either deleted, or worse - not deleted and left as duplicate content; now another page has the same content. This isn't such an issue intra-site, but is still far less than optimal and is seen as such by the search engines. Duplicate content is to avoided at all times wherever possible, whether accross more than one domain or within a single domain.
With all it takes to get attention and traction from the search engines for individual pages, who would ever create new pages and have to start the painstaking process all over again? Normal web designers who redesign existing sites would do that. Why? Because telented though they are - most web designers don't have skill in SEO services, they have skill and talent in creating great, functional and fully-featured web sites. That's OK if it's Microsoft, but not if it's a normal sized company or smaller. Redesigns need to show recognition of search engines and existing traction the site has.
